Easy Oat Milk
Hawaiʻiʻs recycling laws changed recently, drastically reducing the types of materials that can be taken to the county recycling centers. We know that reducing is better than recycling, but that law change was the kick in the pants we needed to get back to making plant milk. Zach loves a big bowl of granola, peanut butter, raisins, and milk for his "second dinner," and I detest black coffee, so the need was dire. We use a NutriBullet and nut milk bag to make this, but you could use any blender and a piece of cheesecloth over a strainer instead.
Ingredients
Cooking
Ingredients
- 1 cup oats
- 4 cups water
- scant 1/4 tsp salt
- 2 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Cooking
- Add all ingredients to blender, and blend it well. It takes about 20 seconds in our NutriBullet.
- Strain into container of your choice. You can do this a couple ways.
- If youʻre using a nut milk bag, the easiest way is to put the nut milk bag into your container, pour the oat milk from the blender directly into the bag, and then slowly lift the bag out, squeezing a little as you do. Donʻt squeeze too hard, or some of the pulp will come through and your oat milk will have more sediment at the bottom.
- If youʻre using a strainer and cheesecloth, position it over the mouth of your container. If your container has a narrow mouth, youʻll want to first strain the oat milk into a bowl or measuring cup first, and then pour your strained oat milk from there into your container.
- Use immediately or store in freezer for up to 5 days. Shake the container before opening each time you use it, as there arenʻt any additives to keep the heavier parts from sinking.
- Rinse out your nut milk bag/cheesecloth immediately for easier cleaning!
- You can easily halve or double this recipe and it comes out exactly the same.
